New Stillorgan Library to open its doors this month

Official opening confirmed for Wednesday 30th September as fit-out of new library nears completion

The new Stillorgan Library will officially open on Wednesday 30th September, Cllr Eoin O’Driscoll has confirmed, with the facility expected to open to the public shortly afterwards.

A young man stands in front of a modern library building, with a construction fence in the foreground. The library features a mix of brick and glass architecture.

The fit-out of the new library is now progressing well, with furniture delivered, book stock in place and the installation of IT systems underway.

The new library, which forms part of the regeneration of St Laurence’s Park, will provide more than 1,000 square metres of library and community space over two floors.

Cllr O’Driscoll said:

“This has been a long-running project for me. I previously worked with Josepha Madigan when she was Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, when we worked to secure the initial Government funding for the new Stillorgan Library.

“It is particularly satisfying, therefore, to see a project that began with that funding commitment now reaching the point where the doors are about to open.

“It is fantastic to see the new library finally taking shape. The furniture is in, the books are arriving and the IT installation is underway. We are now very close to the point where the people of Stillorgan can walk through the doors of their new library.

“Stillorgan has been without a proper permanent library for several years while this development was underway, so I know there will be a lot of excitement locally when the new building opens.

“A library is much more than somewhere to borrow a book. It is somewhere to learn, study, meet people, access technology and participate in the life of the community. I want this to become a place that people use every day and that is genuinely at the heart of Stillorgan.

“The official launch will take place on Wednesday 30th September and the intention is that the library will open to the public as soon as possible afterwards, once the final systems and checks are complete.

“I want to thank the library staff and everyone involved in delivering the project, as well as the local residents who have been waiting patiently for this day. I’m really looking forward to seeing the new library become part of everyday life in Stillorgan.”

To facilitate the move to the new facility, the temporary library in Stillorgan Shopping Centre will close from Monday 21th September. This will allow the existing unit to be stripped out for re-letting and remaining items to be transferred to the new library.

The new library is being delivered as part of the wider regeneration of St Laurence’s Park, alongside new homes and improved community amenities.
